Shimano launches new XC and gravel racing pedals, handlebars, stems and £400 MTB shoes

It's a busy old day for Shimano. Not only has the brand launched its new XTR groupset, but there are also several components being added to the catalogue, including new XC/gravel racing pedals, shoes, handlebars, and stems. Let's take a look at the details.

XTR PD-M9200 pedals
Continuing with Shimano's theme of employing really catchy names, the XTR PD-M9200 pedals are the brand's new cross-country and gravel racing clipless pedal.
They offer a low platform height alongside a wide bearing placement, which Shimano says offers "stability". The axle housing is slim, and the length of the axle can be chosen between a standard length or a shorter, 3mm version. This allows riders to choose their Q-factors more carefully, particularly if they're transitioning from road riding into gravel.
The pedals are dual-sided and compatible with SPD cleats, and feature an open binding design which Shimano says helps with shedding mud as well as "reliable engagement on rough terrain."
The sealed ball and cone bearings spin on a chromoly steel spindle, which aims to offer durability.
They come in at a claimed weight of 314g for the pair, and we're awaiting pricing information. But what we do know is that Shimano very cleverly suggests pairing these pedals with the S-Phyre XC903 shoes. And funnily enough, Shimano has just launched a limited edition version...
Limited edition S-Phyre MTB shoes
Some people are just big fans of certain groupsets, right? We've all got that one friend who insists on running Campagnolo on their gravel bike, or instantly switching their mountain bike brakes to their 10-year-old XTR calipers. And Shimano is celebrating this die-hard loyalty, or as the brand says, "XTR excellence," with a new pair of MTB shoes.
The S-Phyre XC903S mountain bike shoes are designed for cross-country riders and pay homage to the popular XTR groupset, and yes, that does mean they're silver and black.
The silvery metallic colourway is part of what makes these shoes so 'exclusive'. That and the metal BOA Li2D dials, which apparently echo the "premium finish of Shimano XTR components."
The shoes use a carbon midsole for stiffness, and weigh a claimed 307g in a size 43. The upper is a microfibre synthetic leather. The shoes are available in sizes 36-48, with some half sizes available as well as wide fitting options. The XC903S shoes are priced at €419.95.
PRO bars and stem
Not content with the slew of other launches this week, Shimano, under its PRO brand, has added a new Tharsis EVO handlebar and PRO Tharsis stem to its catalogue.
They're both designed for enduro riders, and developed to enhance the rider's bike fit - by that, the brand doesn't mean you're sitting well on the bike, it means you are in the XTR eco-system now, and these are the finishing bits that look best with your levers.
The bar is created using T800 carbon fibre and features an oversized 35mm clamp diameter. This, Shimano says, is to reduce fatigue through the absorption of trail buzz. The new PRO cockpit also allows for fully internal cable routing.
Coming in multiple options, they come in a width of 780mm, and a 20mm or 30mm rise, depending on the model. The backsweep is eight degrees and upsweep four degrees, and they come in at a claimed weight of 210g and above.
The Tharsis stem is manufactured from 7000 Series aluminium and comes in 35mm, 40mm, and 50mm lengths.
Riders get the choice of five decal colours, which you can mix and match to other Shimano components. For example, if you're a blue or purple fan, you can match your bars decals to your PD-GR400 flat pedals. The options are endless.
Prices start from £200 for the bars and £140 for the stem.
