The Boardman Bikes 2021 ADV range has received an update, including new specs and colourways for both the women's and the men's bikes. There's three bikes to choose from and all are under £1,000, making the brand a very competitive option for those looking to dip their toe in the gravel and adventure bike pool. 

The Endura SingleTrack II helmet is hugely well ventilated, comfy and good value to boot. If you're looking for an inexpensive lid for hot days and don't mind foregoing a MIPS (or similar) liner, this could be right up your street. 

The Giro Chronicle MIPS is a mid-priced mountain bike trail lid with plenty of features. It has a rather deep fit and looks a little bowl shaped, but does offer good coverage and the build quality is impressive. 

The new Specialized Status is a long travel mullet bike – business up front, party in the back – specifically designed around a 29er front wheel and a 27.5" rear. It's a fast and hard-hitting enduro bike and the price is good, though the super-short chainstays create a noticeably rearward weight bias that won't suit everyone.

The Pearl Izumi women's X-Alp Elevate is a rugged enduro/all-mountain SPD shoe that grips well in the wet and is reasonably stiff. They're ideal for massive hike-a-bikes, but give a rather numb pedal connection if you use large-platformed pedals – and if you want truly secure heels, you have to lace them tight.
