Hunt brings its new H_Core tech to gravel with the 25 Carbon Gravel X-Wide wheelset, offering greater strength and space for mtb tyres

Despite its road-based heritage, gravel is a genre that's constantly blurring the lines between gravel itself and mountain biking. Bushing that boundary further is Hunt's all-new 25 Carbon Gravel X-Wide wheelset that uses tech first established on the brand's Proven MTB range and can seat super-fat tyres.

Gravel is one seriously wide genre. On one end of the spectrum, you've got weight weenies and aero-chasers, whereas on the other, you've got steel frames, suspension, and comfort-inducing tyres. With its new 25 Carbon Gravel X-Wide wheels, Hunt promises to bring big strength, as well as the ability to fit mountain bike-sized tyres, so it looks like these sit more on the burly end of the gravel scale.
These wheels use a reasonably new technology from Hunt dubbed H_Core. It is made of two thin but highly compacted slivers of carbon that hide inside of the rim, in the junction between the rim bed and the rim's hook. Apparently, this doesn't add any weight, but it ups the wheel's overall strength and impact resistance. Speaking of weight, Hunt claims that these wheels weigh 1,472g per pair.
As for the rim width itself, it measures in at 27mm, which is certainly treading into MTB territory. But because of that wide internal width, these hoops can fit wide tyres, 2.5in wide, in fact.
This wheelset uses Hunt's H_Ratchet 36T SGL hubs that offer a 10-degree engagement angle. We're told that this design uses less aluminium in the hub shell and saves weight over traditional pawled designs. The rim is laced to the hub via 28 reinforced Pillar PSR triple butted J-bend spokes, which are said to help reduce weight and 'provide greater elasticity'. There's an asymmetric rim profile too, with angular spoke patches in a bit to reduce stress at the spoke holes.
Hunt's new 25 Carbon Gravel X-Wide wheelset is available in Boost and Non-Boost spacing, with HG, Microspline, SRAM XD/XDR, Campagnolo and Campagnolo N3W freehubs. It'll then set you back £949.
